Planes and Dimensions
The concept of Planes and Dimensions describes the metaphysical architecture of reality within the Continuum Universes. A dimension is a fully independent continuum of space, time, and metaphysical law. Each dimension exists "adjacent" to others, separated by boundaries of cosmic law and divine design. Within a single dimension, multiple planes may exist, layered atop one another in a hierarchy of being.
From a mortal perspective, these terms are often confused; only the Divines and their chosen emissaries perceive the true structure.
Dimensions
Dimensions are sovereign realities, sometimes called "adjacent worlds." Each dimension possesses its own physical constants, laws of magic, and cycles of time. Travel between dimensions is extremely rare and often destabilizing, as evidenced by catastrophic events such as the Convergence.
Characteristics of dimensions:
- Exist independently, each an enclosed totality of creation.
- Adjacent but not overlapping; separation prevents natural bleed of energy or law.
- Governed by Divine Parents, who set Universal Law within their domain.
- Vulnerable to breaches when unnatural conduits (such as The Contradiction) are forced open.
Planes
Planes exist within a single dimension. They are not separate creations, but strata layered "on top" of one another. "Above" or "below" are metaphors used by the Divines, reflecting spiritual elevation or descent rather than spatial orientation.
Characteristics of planes:
- Share the same dimensional laws but operate at different vibrational or metaphysical frequencies.
- Common examples include Mortal Planes, Spirit Planes, Celestial Planes, and Shadow Planes.
- Serve as transitional realms: mortals ascend or descend across planes in life, death, or judgment.
- Can overlap, allowing planar phenomena (dreams, hauntings, astral projection) to bleed into mortal experience.
Divine Perspective
From the perspective of the Divines, the layering of planes is an intentional design. Mortal souls traverse these planes as part of their growth, judgment, and possible immortalization. The Divine Parents craft both dimensions and planes as pedagogical tools: dimensions as grand laboratories of creation, planes as classrooms within them.
Trivia
- In common myth, mortals often mistake planes for separate dimensions due to their alien qualities.
- Some scholars describe planes as âchaptersâ within a dimensional âbook,â whereas dimensions are entirely different âbooksâ within the cosmic library.
- The Aenorians believe their stewardship of the Aetherium Shards stabilizes not only planes but also the dimensional fabric itself. Though this is conjecture.
