Divine Fathoming
Divine Fathoming is the sacred act through which a Divine or pair of Divine Parents brings an entire universe into being.
It is both an expression of divine imagination and a metaphysical process governed by the Rights of Divine Creation.
Every universe within the Continuum Universes originates from such a Fathoming — each the reflection of its creator’s will, emotion, and chosen method of expression.
To fathom is to measure the infinite through self-expression: a divine being transforms their inner thought into external reality. The result is a unique universe, structured by the form and intent of its creation.
Nature of the Fathoming[edit | edit source]
A Fathoming is not simple invention or command. It is a **conversion of divine thought into substance** — the moment when abstract will crosses the threshold into manifestation. This process releases the first pulse of Essence, the foundational energy that sustains creation. Once initiated, the Fathoming becomes self-perpetuating; the universe continues to expand, refine, and define itself according to its founding pattern.
Only beings who possess the Rights of Divine Creation can perform this act. These rights are granted sparingly by the highest order of Divines and signify total mastery of metaphysical law, moral alignment, and creative integrity.
The Methods of Fathoming[edit | edit source]
Each Divine or Divine Pair expresses creation differently. The style of Fathoming determines the metaphysical and physical nature of the resulting universe.
| Method | Description | Example Universe |
|---|---|---|
| Forging | Creation through deliberate construction, melding heat, pressure, and divine labor. The universe becomes a forge of continuous evolution. | Sodahan |
| Singing | Creation through resonance and sound; reality formed from harmonic vibration and law. | Galaxa |
| Dreaming | Creation through subconscious imagination; mutable, surreal, often bound by emotional logic. | Nir-Helan |
| Painting | Creation through visualization and form; universes defined by beauty, symbolism, and symmetry. | Aethern |
| Storytelling | Creation through narrative and fate; reality structured by archetype and mythic progression. | Midheim |
These methods are not merely artistic choices — they define the metaphysical DNA of each universe, determining how Essence behaves, how time flows, and how souls evolve.
Rights of Divine Creation[edit | edit source]
The Rights of Divine Creation are sacred decrees allowing a being to perform a Fathoming. Without them, any attempt to create results in instability, collapse, or corruption — producing realms such as The Contradiction. These Rights are conferred by the elder Divines who maintain the order of the Continuum, ensuring that each new universe aligns with the harmony of existence.
Possession of these Rights implies not only creative capacity but also responsibility: every act of creation is an act of governance. The Fathomer becomes eternally bound to their universe, sharing its triumphs, traumas, and eventual dissolution.
Fathoming and Essence[edit | edit source]
A Fathoming releases the first wave of Essence (Sodahan), often called the First Flame. This initial surge imprints the universe with the emotional and conceptual resonance of its creator. Essence becomes the living record of the Fathomer’s thought — every law of physics, every moral truth, every soul pattern reflects that original moment of inspiration.
In this way, Essence is the language of Fathoming, and every being born within a universe carries a fragment of its original tone.
Failures and The Contradiction[edit | edit source]
When a Divine attempts a Fathoming without proper Rights or alignment, the process collapses. Instead of coherent Essence, the act produces anti-creation — fragmented will without harmony. These failed universes fall into themselves, forming regions of paradox and instability collectively known as The Contradiction.
The Contradiction thus represents the discarded drafts of divine imagination — worlds that could not sustain coherence. While forbidden, some entities such as the The Deviants exploit these remnants as conduits for interdimensional travel, further destabilizing the Continuum.
Philosophical Interpretations[edit | edit source]
Theologians of the Continuum often say: > “To fathom is to remember the infinite and give it boundaries.”
Each Fathoming mirrors its creator’s essence — their strengths, flaws, and desires. A universe forged through rage becomes a furnace; one sung in sorrow becomes a elegy. Thus, creation is both revelation and confession: every cosmos is a self-portrait of its Divine Parent.
Continuum Context[edit | edit source]
Fathoming is the heartbeat of the Continuum Universes. It ensures perpetual diversity, with each new universe adding a unique expression of divine will to existence. Yet, every Fathoming risks imbalance — if too many universes draw from conflicting ideals, the fabric between them strains, leading to events like The Convergence.
The Divine Council monitors potential Fathomings, ensuring that new universes contribute to the overall harmony rather than chaos.
Modern Relevance[edit | edit source]
In the current age, no new Fathomings have been sanctioned since the creation of Sodahan. The divine right to create remains locked by decree, as the spread of the Contradiction threatens to unravel existing realities. However, prophecies in several universes foretell a final, collaborative Fathoming — the creation of a universe meant to reunite the Continuum.
