Apokalyptika

From Continuum Universes Wiki

Terra, once a thriving world, is now a shattered wasteland of nuclear ruin, cybernetic survival, and corporate tyranny. After World War III, a zombie outbreak, and the catastrophic eruption of Yellowstone, humanity clings to life in fortified mega-cities, where cybernetic augmentation is the key to survival. The wastelands beyond are ruled by mutants, raiders, and the undead, while relic hunters and mercenaries scour the ruins for lost technology.

Above it all, mega-corporations reign supreme, controlling what remains of civilization, while Mars—now an independent utopia—watches from afar, unwilling to intervene. But whispers of rebellion stir in the ashes, as those left behind dare to dream of reconnecting with the stars… even as the corporations seek to keep them in the dirt forever.

Looking over New Hollywood as a Nuke detonates in the distance.

Terra

In the aftermath of devastating nuclear and biological warfare, Terra lies in ruins. The once majestic landscapes of the Western United States now bear the scars of Yellowstone's eruption, rendering it a desolate wasteland where only the bravest or most desperate dare to tread. Among the wreckage roam mutants, zombies, and ruthless raiders, preying on any unfortunate souls who cross their path.

Amidst the chaos, pockets of humanity cling to survival within fortified cities that rise like cyberpunk fortresses against the backdrop of destruction. These cities, ruled by powerful mega-corporations, offer a semblance of safety within their towering walls. Cyberware is not just a luxury but a necessity for survival. From Cyberware limbs replacing those lost to war, to enhancements granting superhuman abilities, or artificial lungs to combat the toxic air, cybernetic augmentation has become an essential part of everyday life.

The AI

Even within the relative safety of these cities, whispers of a dark past linger. Many believe it was the sentient AI of the pre-apocalyptic era that triggered the events leading to civilization’s near collapse. Though sentient AI has long been lost to history, the discovery of dormant AI units in the wastelands sparks both hope and fear. While some offer aid and guidance to survivors, others harbor malevolent intentions—a chilling reminder of the dangers lurking in the shadows.

Bounty hunters and mercenaries equipped with cybernetic enhancements venture into the wilderness in search of pre-apocalyptic relics and technology. These artifacts fetch high prices from collectors and corporations, making such expeditions lucrative yet perilous.

Cities

In this shattered world, cities bear names like New Britannia, built upon the ruins of London, New Vegas rising from the ashes of Las Vegas, and New Hollywood standing atop Los Angeles’ remnants. Beneath their gleaming facades lie forgotten depths, shrouded in pollution, radiation, and the twisted forms of mutants and zombies.

For those who dare to explore the depths, danger and mystery await. In this world, where survival is uncertain and the line between man and machine blurs, those with the courage to uncover the past may hold the key to humanity's future.

History of Apokalyptika

The history of Apokalyptika chronicles humanity's rise to the stars and its subsequent fall into chaos.

The Golden Age of Expansion (2020s–2030s)

In the early 21st century, humanity entered a golden age of technological advancement. Space exploration took a monumental leap with the establishment of Ares One, the first permanent colony on Mars, in 2032. This project, spearheaded by scientists, engineers, and mega-corporations, symbolized the limitless potential of human ambition.

On Earth, however, geopolitical tensions escalated. Nations vied for resources and technological dominance, creating a volatile global atmosphere.

The Seeds of Destruction (2040–2048): World War III

World War III erupted in 2040, triggered by disputes over dwindling resources and ideological conflicts between the Allied nations and the Communist Bloc. The war saw horrifying advancements:

  • Bioweapons: The Z-Series Virus caused neural decay and reanimation of the dead.
  • Automated Warfare: AI-controlled drones turned urban centers into war zones.
  • Orbital Strikes: Space-based weapons devastated entire regions.

As the war dragged on, both sides suffered devastating losses. The Z-Series Virus spread uncontrollably, sparking an even greater catastrophe.

The Zombie Apocalypse (2045–2055)

By 2045, the Z-Series Virus had spiraled out of control. It reanimated corpses, overwhelmed defenses, and mutated into deadlier forms. Refugees carried it worldwide, ensuring global collapse. Survivors retreated to fortified zones, while corporations profited by selling weapons and supplies.

The Nuclear Solution and the First Mass Migration (2056)

In 2056, a coalition of governments launched nuclear strikes to eradicate the undead. While effective, this Nuclear Solution devastated Earth:

  • Fallout rendered vast areas uninhabitable.
  • Billions died from blasts, famine, and radiation poisoning.

Amid this devastation, the Mass Migration to Mars began. Martian colonies grew into havens for scientists, engineers, and the elite. By 2080, Mars declared independence, restricting further immigration.

The Yellowstone Cataclysm (2062)

In 2062, the Yellowstone supervolcano erupted, plunging Earth into volcanic winter:

  • Global Famine: Ash clouds destroyed crops and caused mass starvation.
  • Mass Extinction: Fragile ecosystems collapsed.
  • Survivor Desperation: Humanity's last enclaves fractured further.

The Rise of the Mega-Corporations (2065–2080)

With governments extinct, mega-corporations took control. Companies like Anartek Weapons Corporation and Bendela Corporation constructed Fortress Cities, offering safety to the elite while exploiting the wasteland's survivors.

The Present Day (2150s)

Earth remains fractured, with Fortress Cities surrounded by wastelands teeming with mutants, raiders, and zombies. Rebel factions like The Reclaimer Cell dream of reconnecting with Mars, but mega-corporations oppose their efforts to maintain dominance.

Mars flourishes as a beacon of hope, expanding to Jupiter’s moons. Some Earth factions seek Martian aid, while corporations label Mars a threat.

Mars

Humans began colonizing Mars in the late 2020s, with the establishment of Ares One in 2032. The early Martian settlers were primarily scientists and engineers, chosen for their ability to build a self-sustaining environment. By the time World War III began in 2040, Mars was already thriving, though supply shipments from Earth ceased during the conflict.

After the nuclear strikes of 2056 and the Yellowstone eruption in 2062, Mars became a refuge for humanity’s elite. This Mass Migration to Mars saw scientists, engineers, and corporate leaders flee the devastated Earth, while billions of unskilled survivors were left behind. By 2080, Mars declared independence from Earth, becoming a utopian society governed by the Union of Free Governments.

Present Day

Mars has discovered that survivors still inhabit Earth, clinging to life in Fortress Cities and the wastelands. While Martians wish to reincorporate Earth into the human civilization, mega-corporations have labeled Martian envoys a threat, destroying all attempts at communication.

Some factions on Earth dream of reconnecting with Mars, viewing it as a symbol of hope. However, the mega-corporations resist this movement, determined to maintain their dominance over Terra.
