Nendrelus is a vast, multi-layered Ecumenopolis in the Galaxa universe, once a world of shallow seas, volcanic glass vents, and sprawling continents. Over the course of its rapid industrialization and deep-core architectural expansion, the planet became encased entirely in megastructures stacked layer upon layer, leaving only engineered environments, agrodomes, and ancient subterranean oceans as remnants of its natural surface.

It is the ancestral home of two native sentient species: the landborn Nendrelan and the ocean-adjacent Arkitan. Once separated by geography, environment, and divergent evolution, their destinies converged after a catastrophic solar event that nearly wiped out the Nendrelan. The Arkitan intervention became a defining moment in the planet’s history.

Planetary Characteristics

Nendrelus’ size, gravity, and silicon-rich geology shaped its early civilizations and later made it ideal for vertical megacity construction.

Size and Gravity

  • Diameter: approximately 1.4× that of Terra Prime
  • Gravity: ~1.2 g
  • Silicon-rich core and mantle containing massive quartz and silica deposits

Nendrelus’ shallow surface seas were supported by enormous aquifers and crustal water tables, feeding geysers and volcanic glass vents.

Star System

The world orbits the small but bright star Nendrellin. Although solar storms are rare, the three flares that struck Nendrelus had devastating consequences for its biosphere.

Surface Environment (Pre-Ecumenopolis)

Prior to complete urbanization, Nendrelus featured:

  • continent-spanning plains
  • shallow seas
  • volcanic silica vents producing molten glass
  • geothermal fields
  • sparse megafauna

These molten-glass vents gave rise to the Nendrelan tradition of blown glass, which later became one of the most valued exports in the sector.

The Subterranean Oceans

Although the planetary surface is now buried beneath stacks of arcologies, the original oceans persist beneath the megacity as:

  • massive reservoirs
  • undercity seas
  • aquifer-fed hydro loops

Adapted, lightless fauna still thrive in these dark waters, including:

  • blind eel-predators
  • silicate-shelled crustaceans
  • deep filter beasts
  • rumored translucent leviathans known as “glass ghosts”

Maintenance crews frequently report encounters, though official acknowledgment remains ambiguous.

Native Sentient Life

Nendrelan

The Nendrelan evolved on the continents, developing a culture around:

  • volcanic silica harvesting
  • blown glass artistry
  • geothermal agriculture
  • coastal fishing

Arkitan

The Arkitan developed on an isolated island in the largest ocean—twice the width of Earth’s Pacific. The island was later found to be:

  • an ancient, metal-rich meteor
  • seeded with rare earth metals
  • saturated with high-conductivity elements

Their environment accelerated their technological evolution.

Solar Catastrophes and Unification

Nendrelus suffered three major solar flares. The third crippled Nendrelan civilization:

  • crops failed
  • power grids collapsed
  • coastal societies collapsed

The Arkitan, sheltered on the night side and technologically advanced, intervened and saved the Nendrelan. Genetic analysis later confirmed a shared ancestor from before the continents divided.

This unity became known as the Great Reconciliation.

Industrial Revolution and Off-World Influence

With Arkitan expertise and off-world trade, Nendrelus entered a hyper-industrial age. Its glass, ceramics, and silicate artistry were traded for:

  • medicine
  • alloys
  • heavy metals
  • propulsion mechanisms
  • early starship parts

The Arkitan embraced foreign knowledge with exceptional speed, spearheading planetary modernization.

Rise of the Ecumenopolis

Over the next millennium, Nendrelus transformed into a planetary city:

  • trillions of tons of alloys imported
  • deep-core pylons drilled into the mantle
  • megacities rising miles above the surface
  • obsolete layers buried under new strata

Today, Nendrelus consists of:

  • hundreds of stacked city levels
  • reservoir oceans below
  • agrodomes and ecological preserves
  • industrial labyrinths reaching into the crust

Native wildlife now persists mainly in engineered biomes.

Modern Nendrelus

Nendrelus is now:

  • home to ~380 billion inhabitants
  • a hub of culture, trade, and criminal syndicates
  • the seat of multiple factions including the Curl-Tail Crime Ring and Felt Ear Crime Ring
  • a marvel of arcology engineering and deep-core design

Despite its industrial sprawl, Nendrelus retains its core identity: glass artistry, Arkitan science, and whispered legends of the deep.
